Speakers
Dr. Denis Haliday is a former United Nations Assistant Secretary General who was the UN
Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq from 1 September 1997 until 1998. He resigned from his
34-year-old position in the UN in protest of the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq by the
Security Council. He served as a member on several Peoples’ Tribunals including on Iraq,
Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. He is a laureate of the Gandhi International Peace Award.
Dr. Maung Zani is a Buddhist-infl uenced Burmese scholar and human rights activist of 30
years who lives in exile in the UK. As the founder and director of the Free Burma Coalition
he has campaigned against the military rule for decades and has become the most outspoken scholar for the rights of Rohingya people. He served as a member on the Peoples’ Tribunal on Sri Lanka and initiated the Peoples’ Tribunal on Myanmar. He was a research fellow at the London School of Economics.
Ms. Seraphine Habimana is a survivor of Rwanda’s genocide. She and her family members
spent nearly 100 days hiding in bushes, and in maize and banana plantations amongst other
places to escape death. She holds a MA in Journalism from the Dublin Institute of
Technology (DIT) and is currently researching for her PhD at the Dublin City University
(DCU).
Mr. Bāshana Abyewardane is the former editor of the Sinhala language weekly, Hiru in Sri
Lanka who has been forced into exile for campaigning for the rights of Tamils. He is a
political analyst and the coordinator of the exiled rights group Journalists for Democracy in
Sri Lanka (www.jdslanka.org)
