Introduction to Humanitarian Emergencies

The Kimmage Development Studies Centre is pleased to open enrollment for a new evening course, entitled Introduction to Humanitarian Emergencies. This six session evening course will provide participants with an introduction to key aspects of Humanitarian Emergencies. The course runs weekly for 6 nights starting Wednesday 2 April at 6-8pm at the Irish Aid Volunteering Centre, 31 O'Connell Street, Dublin 1.

The course is aimed both at

  • members of the general public who are keen to learn more about what actually happens in Emergencies and how communities, governments and aid agencies respond, and,
  • those working in government or aid organisations who are head office based and involved in some aspect of Emergencies i.e. in fundraising, public relations, awareness raising or development education but who are not actually on the front line and as a consequence do not have direct field experience of Emergency response.

Course Objectives

  • To provide participants with an introduction to key aspects of Humanitarian Emergencies.
  • To introduce and explain what actually happens in Emergencies.
  • To explore how communities, governments and aid agencies respond.
  • To introduce participants to key sectoral issues and responses, particularly related to public health, food security and nutrition, shelter and security.
